New Feature: Increase Data Efficiency and Costs-Savings with End-to-End Compression

As businesses experience increasing data growth, enterprise IT must balance the need for more capacity with the need to constrain their datacenter footprint and control costs.

One way that organizations can save money on storage is by offloading data from expensive primary NAS to more cost-effective secondary storage.

Igneous customers already experience efficient backup with our backup model of level 0 and incremental forever, but we’re taking data efficiency one step further with our new feature, end-to-end compression.

What is End-to-End Compression?

Compression reduces the amount of physical storage you need for your data. For example, if the logical space, or storage that your data typically takes up, is 100TB, but the data is compressed to 50TB with a compression ratio of 2:1, then you only need 50TB of physical storage.

Igneous has implemented a high performance compression algorithm that automatically compresses data read off NAS before it’s sent to be stored on Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud.

This means that when you backup to Igneous, you don’t need a 1:1 ratio of capacity for your data in secondary storage. The compression ratio can vary significantly depending on the file density and file size, but Igneous customers have seen ratios from 30% to 60% for compressible datasets.

What Does Compression Mean for Igneous Customers?


Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud compresses customer data automatically as it’s backed up. If you are already backing up data with Igneous, there’s no need to do anything—we’re already helping you save capacity and cut costs!

In addition, we take care of decompression when you restore data, when you mount as read-only NFS and read files, and even when you access underlying storage via S3 API.

As with all of our software updates, end-to-end compression was rolled out non-disruptively. Customers began experiencing the benefits of compression without interruptions to user functions.
