New Feature: Increase Data Throughput with Network Data Compression

by Catherine Chiang – November 3, 2017

When moving large amounts of data between datacenters and/or public cloud, the amount of bandwidth in the datacenter often exceeds the bandwidth between datacenters, limiting throughput and speed of data movement.

To accommodate this bandwidth imbalance, Igneous recently released a new feature: network data compression, which enables customers using our Remote Service Router to compress data traversing their wide area network (WAN).

What does this mean for customers? Let’s break it down.

Igneous Remote Service Router

The Igneous Remote Service Router offers flexibility by allowing customers to locate the Igneous backup software in a datacenter or service provider away from a centralized Igneous Data Box and backup across their WAN.

The Remote Service Router backs up and securely moves data from primary storage to the Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud, which can be housed in any datacenter. This option allows enterprises to consolidate backup in a central location while software in the datacenters perform the backup.

Enterprises can also use the Remote Service Router to build in offsite redundancy as part of their backup and archive strategy or use colocation facilities for cost-effectiveness or geographical reasons.

What Does Wire Compression Mean for Customers?

Network data compression decreases the size of the data being transferred, increasing the throughput of data without impacting network performance. While this may not make a significant difference in local area networks (LANs), wire compression can improve data movement in WANs where data must be moved over longer distances.

With wire compression reducing the network impact of moving data via the Remote Service Router, customers can now move more data through their WAN at once.

Customers will experience fast compression and high performance with Igneous because we used Snappy, a data compression and decompression library built for speed.

It’s now easier than ever to move data from where it lives to where it’s needed with Igneous.

Experience Non-disruptive Updates with Zero-Touch Infrastructure

Like all of our software updates, this new feature was rolled out nondisruptively. Customers can now take advantage of wire compression without experiencing any interruptions in user activity or applications.
